David Kimber Award - Student of the Year

The 2007 winners of the student of the year at RTA Didcot were presented during class on Tuesday 18th December 2007.

Congratulations go to our recipients;

2007 UK Open

The UK Open was held on 24th November at UWIC, Cardiff and once again we were really successful. Our medallists were:

Ricky De Winton - Bronze in Patterns, Gold in Sparring and Gold in Special Technique,

Kirsty Miller - Gold in Patterns and Bronze in Sparring,

Faye Miller - Bronze in Sparring

Don Ward - Gold in Power,

Louise Morrow - Bronze in Patterns,

Andy Strong - Silver in Sparring 

Aaron Wright - Bronze in Sparring,

Pippa Pearce - Silver in Sparring,

Liam Miller - Silver in Patterns

Alison Fisher - Silver in Sparring, Gold in Power,

Ryan Morrow - Bronze in Patterns and Sparring

And Megan Barlow - Bronze in Sparring.

Our other competitors were Becky Ward, Russell Brady, Joe Tuckwell, Mel Pitman, Rae Deane, Louis Figon, and Jamie Allen. Thanks to our umpire Andy Haynes, and Carl Davis for coaching.

 

The next event is the English Open at K2 Crawley on March 15th 2008. This event will coincide with GM Rhee’s 70th birthday and will feature a Master’s demonstration. Please support this event – all spectators have free admission.

 

 

Pro Taekwon-Do, Croatia Round Zero

 

The first winter’s snow fell as the inaugural professional TKD fight night took place in the Dom Sportova Hall in Zagreb , capital of Croatia on Saturday 17th November 2007. Eight competitors from Bosnia Herzegovina, Canada , Croatia , Iran , North Korea , Russia , South Korea and Tajikistan fought for the first prize of $30,000 U.S. dollars. Even though Croatia was playing Macedonia in a UEFA football qualifier at the same time, 3,500 spectators took their seats to witness full contact ITF matches.

 

Umpires specially selected from around Europe were Master Michael Prewett VIII (Wales ), Master Gary Miller VII (England ), Mr Floyd Keane VI (Ireland ), Mr Murat Sunetov VI (Russia ), Mr Emin Duracovic VI (Slovenia ) and Mr Vergili Sitnilski V (Bulgaria ).

 

It was organised by AETF President Master Anto Toni Nobilo VIII. VIPs included IOC Member & ITF President Professor Chang Ung and First Grandmaster Rhee Ki Ha, Snr Vice President of ITF. Miller TKD sends congratulations to the winner Andrei Krylov of Russia , who stopped Woytek Kaszowski of Canada in the final. 2007 European Championships

 

This was held in Tallinn , Estonia – formerly of the Soviet Union. It was attended by almost 400 black belt competitors from 29 countries. RTA Didcot was well represented and our congratulations go to;

Ricky De Winton – Bronze in sparring,

Andrew Haynes – Bronze in Patterns,

Kirsty Miller – Bronze in Patterns,

plus Carl Davis who withdrew from the individual events with an injury. Next year the Euro is in Porec , Croatia in May.

 

 

 

 

Fundraising Event

As previously mentioned there is to be a fund raising workshop on Thursday 21st February at Didcot Leisure Centre, Mereland Rd. This event will cover all aspects of competition & grading performance, so if you are not interested in competition there will still be something for you.

 

This event is open to all members regardless of age or grade. Times are 7.00pm – 9.00pm

2007 London Open Championships
At the recent London Open Taekwon-Do championships in Guildford, Surrey RTA Didcot had some of it's younger members winning thier first medals.Ryan Morrow (8) silver & bronze, Geno Naughton (11) silver and Liam Miller (9) bronze all returned home with a share of the spoils. Top performance went to 16 year old Kirsty Miller who picked up Gold in Sparring & Silver in Pattern.
    

 

Seminar & Grading 10th June 2007

Following the UKTA Seminar & Grading under the watchful eye of Senior Master Paul Cutler VIII Dan in Wallingford on Sunday 10th June, congratulations to our members on thier success. Promoted to 1st Kup were Andrew Tomkinson, Jamie Tuckwell, Joe Tuckwell, Melinda Pitman & Jack Grant. Also promoted were Maciej Morozow 3rd Kup, Pippa Pearce 5th Kup, Andrew Denton 6th Kup & James Pearce 9th Kup.                                

2007 UKTA Welsh Open Results

Well done to all our members who took part in the UKTA Welsh Open Championships at UWIC Cardiff on Saturday 2nd June 2007. RTA Finished as overall runners up to Ely by only 1 point, with Fairwater coming a very close 3rd. Our competitors were -

15th ITF World Championships

Medals for Miller TKD Members 

Miller TKD members returned from the 15th ITF World Championships in beautiful Bled, Slovenia with the men crowned World Champions in Team Power after a closely fought tie-break with DPR Korea. Captain Richard De Winton performed the winning break to secure the title for team members Carl Davis & Andrew Haynes. Oxford University student Valentina Iotchkova also won Bronze in 1st Dan pattern following a narrow semi-final loss to the Gold medal winner from DPR Korea. Well done to all our members on another very successful championship. We are so proud of you.  

              

Chang Ung Cup

Our members were among the medals at this international open black belt event held in Edinburgh on the 18th February. This was a useful warm up event prior to the UKTA Scottish Open. Grandmaster Rhee welcomed ITF President Prof. Chang Ung as competition got under way. Our results were;

Andrew Haynes was unwell during the event & did not feature among the medal winners. 

Taekwon-Do twinning with Slovakia

Mr Bohdan Hrobon has completed his studies at Oxford University & returned to Martin, Slovakia where he will be opening two TKD schools which are to be twinned with RTA Didcot / Oxford University TKD.

World Championships

Bled, Slovenia is the venue for the 2007 ITF Adult World Championships. We will be well represented due to the selection of Richard De Winton III, Carl Davis III, Andrew Haynes II and Valentina Iotchkova I. Master Miller will also be attending as official umpire for England. Good luck to all our members who are training very hard in preparation.

GM Rhee Black Belt Seminar

This will take place in Didcot on 24th June. More details will follow nearer the time.

Fundraising Event

Another fund raising “competition workshop” will take place at the end of April or early in May as we continue our support for our International competitors. Keep an eye on the notice board for more info.

Mark Miller Completes ITF Course in Slovakialetes ITF Course in Slovakia      

Mark Miller has completed the 2006 ITF Special Course in Slovakia under Master Ri Yong Sok. He is the fourth of the five Miller brothers to train at this level in Taekwon-Do after Master Gary Miller VII Dan, Mr Ian Miller V Dan and Mr Michael Miller IV Dan (Deceased in June 1998).

Master Miller Visits ITF Spain

At the end of November Master Miller visited the town of Los Barrios in Andalucia & taught at the Dojang of Senor Frank Diaz IV Dan. In attendance were Katherine & Nicole Axten, who both trained at RTA Didcot before the family moved to Spain 3 years ago.

2006 UK Open

RTA Didcot regained the Best Overall School trophy at the recent UK Open Championships in Sheffield.

2006 European Championships

Although no medals were achieved at this event for RTA Didcot, we were well represented at both competitor & umpire level. Ricky De Winton & Carl Davis were both members of the England team which was unlucky with the draw. Both of them performed in a manner to make you all very proud.

27 countries had competitors.

Master Miller was present in his capacity as a member of the All Europe Taekwon-Do Federation Umpire Committee. This involves selection of umpires from the various European nations, creating ring councils and monitoring umpire & referee performance during the championships.

Fundraising Event

The fund raiser event managed to raise £1,200 towards supporting our international competitors during 2006. Deepest thanks to all of you that attended or supported our events.

 T – Shirt Design Competition

As we look for a new t-shirt in 2007 there is to be a t-shirt design competition. Entries are invited for a print design of any kind that you would like to wear at events next year. Closing date will be end of December. 

 Gradings

 

Please be aware that the minimum waiting times between gradings that are stipulated by ITF are only for students of very high ability. It is not uncommon for the average student to more than double the waiting time as they continue to improve.
